New Fair Housing Law is going into effect on June 20th, 2020. The purpose is to provide comprehensive protections from discrimination in housing. Under new law, any real estate professional must provide a prospective client with a new disclosure form that references to relevant provisions of the New York State Human Rights Law and also has the necessary information as to how to file a complaint for housing discrimination. It is unlawful for any property owner, landlord, property manager or other person who sells, rents or leases housing, to discriminate based on certain protected characteristics, which include, but are not limited to race, creed, color, national origin, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, military status, sex, age, disability, marital status, lawful source of income or familial status.
